A stage of their own
Gallo Center Repertory Company brings local theatre to life

209 residents are likely aware of the downtown Modesto arts and entertainment treasure, the Gallo Center for the Arts. Less well known may be the treasure within the treasure: the Gallo Center Repertory Company (GCRC), the Gallo Center’s in-house produced theater operation. It is a rarity in the world of the performing arts, in which presenting organizations similar to the Gallo Center do not typically produce performances of their own.

Founded 15 years ago with the mission to entertain, inspire, and educate, GCRC brings high-quality, locally cast productions to life in the Foster Family Theater—a beautifully intimate 440-seat space. Each season showcases a thoughtfully curated lineup of plays and musicals that blend popular titles with artistic ambition. From beloved classics to contemporary favorites, GCRC performances reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the Central Valley community.

The GCRC’s 2025/26 season is full of mystery and intrigue. The season begins with a new stage adaptation of the classic mystery that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film, “Dial M for Murder,” starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of “Dial M for Murder” breathes new life into a classic thriller. Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director of The Old Globe in San Diego, where the play premiered in 2021, proposed a fresh take that centered the female perspective. Hatcher’s response was to elevate Margot, the play’s would-be victim, from passive to powerful.

“In the original, Margot sits in the back,” Hatcher says. “I wanted to put her in the driver’s seat.” By reimagining her as an active participant in her fate, Hatcher reshapes the narrative without disrupting its core suspense. Hatcher also reimagined Max, the American love interest, as Maxine—a bold, funny foil to Margot’s refined world. This fresh energy modernizes the tone while preserving the thriller’s essence. Humor, he notes, is essential: “It binds the audience, even to a villain.”

A veteran of adaptations, Hatcher brings deep craft to the process.

“Adaptation is more objective,” he explains, “but you still have to bring something of yourself.”

His approach keeps Knott’s meticulous plot intact while infusing it with new life. Ultimately, “Dial M for Murder” endures because it delivers: mystery, clarity and justice, rare comforts in chaotic times. “It’s comfort food with surprises,” Hatcher says. “A good thriller brings relief and release. Right now, that’s exactly what people want.”

“Dial M for Murder” plays in the Foster Family Theatre at the Gallo Center for the Arts for six performances, Oct. 10-18. GCRC’s other productions for the 25/26 season are “Into the Woods,” Dec. 6 – 14; “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” March 13 – 22, 2026; and “The Da Vinci Code,” May 2 – 10, 2026. Ticket prices for all GCRC performances begin at $28 when purchased in person at the box office.

Season subscribers can enjoy all four productions with a 15% discount, and the opportunity to add special performances like “Purlie Victorious” by Sankofa Theatre Company, the Central Valley’s only African American theatre troupe.

But GCRC isn’t just for the audience—it’s powered by the community. Local actors, designers, and theater lovers are encouraged to get involved. Open auditions are held before each production, and all levels of experience are welcome. It’s an incredible opportunity to take part in professional-caliber theater while forging friendships and building confidence.

Whether you’re a devoted theatergoer, an aspiring performer, or simply seeking meaningful cultural experiences, GCRC offers something for everyone, including an invitation to be part of something bigger—a local tradition of storytelling that brings people together in a magical way.
